April 2008 President's Message

Sheila Rutledge

Certified Professional Photographer F-PPANI

Greetings Friends,

As I write this, I my head is overflowing with ideas for marketing, posing and customer service that I picked up at the new MARC conference I just got back from in Decatur. My thanks to the terrific board who planned the convention and the speakers they brought in. I genuinely think this was one of the BEST line-ups of talent I have ever enjoyed at the state convention level.

Many speakers talked about the fundamental need to market MORE in a down economy and gave some terrific ideas that were low in cost to bring in new customers. Unfortunately, some spoke about members who were struggling in their business in this economy. All of the speakers understood the essential need to continue to reach out to new customers but to never forget to reach out to those already in your customer base. Did it cost money for me to close my studio and travel to the convention, YES . Was it vital to the success of my business? I genuinely think so. Have you been to a Northern meeting yet this year? In an economy where every advertising dollar counts can you afford to miss the one idea that will keep your name out in front of potential customers? MARC, PPANI are great places to hear what the best in the business are doing in a tougher battle for families spending dollars.

Congratulations to those who entered the print competition! Northern was well represented. By competing in print competition, the makers continue to refine their skills and use the opportunity to let their communities and customers know about their talents.

Happy Birthday to all of our members celebrating their birthday in April. Aimee Eckert, Trish Featherly, William Gommel, Jr., David Hails, Kevin Harvey, Gus Holland, Jack Hoyt, Howard Kier, Kurt Koester, Bill Ostrander, Rudy Popovich, Nick Porcaro, Peggy Sue Seehafer, Kevin Todd Smith, Robert Wehmeier and Larry Zabinski.

Print Challenge for 2009 - "Loose Ends "

1. The Challenge will have a new theme every year. The theme is also the title for all entries. A large part of the judge’s score should include how well the entry fits the theme.
2. The entry must be based on and include an original photograph created by the maker. The size is not limited except by rule 3, and using more than the usual two dimensions is encouraged.
3. The entry must be self-contained and able to be brought before the judges by the print committee. Nothing external to the entry (except the judging lights) should be required for viewing and judging.
4. The entry must be repeatable, meaning that the entry should be able to be brought back before the judges later for judging of Best Challenge and be exactly as it was initially.
5. The entry may contain other photographic images and non-photographic images, may contain moving parts, sound effects, or be battery operated. The Print Chairman (along with any consultants of his choice) will decide any question of eligibility.
