Letter From the President – June

A Letter from the President
Hello Northern!

What an amazing first half of the year! It was great to see many of you at our last two workshops with Jessica Edwards and Emily Andrews.

We also had a great time watching print competition in May and sharing a drink during our “cocktail hour”. Thank you PROCAM for allowing us to have our cocktail hour during our print competition. Sabina Cavalli also served as one of our jurors and did an amazing job!

It was great to see many of our long-standing members, such as Marie and Matt Kane as well as Kathryn Northcott. They have been such integral members of Northern and we look forward to seeing many more of you for the remainder of the 2016 workshops.

Serving our members has and always will be a core value statement by building the highest quality education for professional photographers.

The Board would like to welcome the following new members that have joined our great Northern family this year:

Luranne Beck
Tim Somers
Sabina Cavalli
Scott McDougall
Jean Jung-McBride
Ben Urbina
Nicole Waite
Paul Stankiewicz
Julie Kaplan
Brandi Orlando
Laura Dajoraite
Kim Ayars
Rebecca Campbell
We look forward to many more years of friendship as we help each other elevate our art and craft as professional photographers!

As many of you know, I am a firm believer in honest dialogue as we build friendships. I must share a short story with you that I had with one of our members which was both a bit “funny” but also very revealing about perceptions. During our dialogue it was mentioned that Northern was “perceived” as a “prestigious” and “hoity-toity” bunch. As I probed deeper into trying to understand we had a great laugh because as it turns out we are not “hoity-toity” based on her personal experience and interaction with our membership…and we are actually a “down to earth” and “fun” group to belong to (I guess the secret is out!).

I did, however, mention that being “prestigious” is not necessarily a bad thing…in fact it is a good thing as long as we balance that with a sense of humility. I believe that Northern has always had some level of prestige because of our constant desire to strive for excellence and the highest quality of education we bring to our membership.

Glad we were able to clarify that confusion…so we have one more “happy” Northern member… Whew! ☺

As many of you know, PPA’s IPC print competition registration has been open and I hope that each of you register your cases soon. Early registration is June 22nd and late registration is July 7th. IPC judging happens August 1st – 4th.

Good luck to everyone…
On the subject of print competition…congrats to everyone that entered our competition in May. Here are some of the highlights:

Congratulations to all of our award winners!

President’s Message and Highlights – April 2016

A Letter from the President
Hello Northern,

Well, by all the images that were posted of me at our April workshop you would have thought that I was the only one having a blast…but that couldn’t be farther from the truth! We had another awesome workshop this month with Carl Caylor! Thank you so much WHCC for sponsoring Carl and allowing him to come and share his artistry and heart with us. He continues to be one of the best in the industry…simply amazing…

(Seriously…why was everyone pointing their camera at me…! LOL )

We had a great turnout and the “buzz” before, during and after the workshop at our cocktail hour was so fun.

Carl had so many great things to say about our members and he REALLY LOVED our “cocktail hour” so much that he is going to do that with his group back in WI. There is no doubt that our “family” is growing in size, but more importantly in terms of the quality and professionalism that Northern continues to define.

Let’s keep this momentum going…

How can we continue the momentum you ask? The answer is two-fold…

First…we, as the Northern Board, promise to continue providing the best leadership and quality educational workshops where we can cultivate an environment where each of us can grow together and build friendships.

Secondly…we ask each of you, as Northern members, to continue to do your part in building Northern. I would like to challenge you not only make each Northern workshop a priority, but also BRING ONE FRIEND to our May workshop! It’s going to be incredible, especially if you have never seen Jessica Edwards share what has made her studio such a success; she is amazing. Remember…BRING ONE FRIEND…and let’s pack the house!

I know it’s been a while since PPA’s District Competition but we definitely need to give a shout out to all our members who did so well:

While I am proud of all our members I am especially proud of those members that took a leap of faith and entered their first PPA affiliate photographic competition…each of them earning their first [soon to be] merits, or more specifically seal(s) toward their International Photographic Competition (IPC) exhibition merit!

Congratulations to Megan Drane, Beth Genengels, Jean Jung-McBride and John Tulipano…you are your way!

I would encourage every member that has not entered yet…talk to each of these members about whether you should enter or not…really ask them…! ☺ Our May meeting will also include a print competition, this would be the perfect opportunity to submit some of your images and get some feedback. Please see the detailed instructions regarding this print competition below.

Speaking of IPC, here are the dates to remember:

Registration opens: May 23, 2016

Early registration deadline: June 22, 2016

Late registration deadline: July 7, 2016 (with additional fee)

As I already mentioned Jessica Edwards is our next speaker in May 11th and you won’t want to miss her…if you haven’t been to a workshop this year ask other members that have attended our workshops…trust me…

I am pretty sure what they’ll say is…you’re missing out! Jessica is sooooo funny… and she is relevant…

Seriously…here are our next three amazing three speakers:

May 11: Jessica Edwards – Senior Photography: “Be the Trend” – PROCAM, 4300 Westbrook, Aurora, IL

Letter From the President – March 2016

A Letter from the President
Hello my fellow Northern-ites,

Where can a photographer and artist, both new to the industry and experienced, learn first-hand by seeing the artistic process, understand the why and why not’s of using various fine paper for various type of images, see and hold the difference between dozens of fine art paper, talk with our speaker and ask questions first hand? It’s at our monthly Northern (PPANI) workshop!

First and foremost, thank you to Maria Bernal for your friendship and sacrificing so much to come to Northern in March. Anyone that knows her personally knows how much she misses her family, including her Tiny Human, during her travels to sacrifice and teach other industry professionals. In addition, I know most of you don’t know this, but she decided to forego the WPPI Awards Night to be with us instead of receiving one of their highest trophies…thank you…thank you…thank you…for sharing your creative process and knowledge! You are simply amazing!

During our lunch break, I had the privilege of handing out some great awards from our very competitive February All-Day Print Competition. It was a tremendous honor not only because of the gravity of the awards, but because it went to some of our newer members which I have grown to call friends:

Congrats John Tulipano for winning the Best of Black and White and Best of Commercial categories.
Congrats to Katherine Owen for winning Best Portrait category.
Congrats to Peggy Sue Seehafer for winning Best Artist and Best of Show categories.
I often get opportunities to speak and judge at other state conventions and meet some amazing talented photographers throughout the country. This past weekend I got to visit with friends at FotoChaos, Missouri’s state convention, and although it was an amazing privilege, it reminds me how thankful I am for my own Northern family back here at home. I know that many organizations want to grow their membership body, which it immensely important, but as for me and our [leadership] family my vision is to grow Northern not only in terms of quantity, but more importantly in quality of professionals with great character wanting to grow in their craft…this is reason “we do what we do”.

I am so excited for our state’s APPI convention, PhotoWorld, this weekend March 18-21. Not only will there be a proliferation of talent, but it is the host of PPA’s North Central District Print Competition and finally a whole lot of good times hanging out with friends…come and join us! All the details can be found at:

PhotoWorld Chicago

I can’t wait for our next month’s program on April 13, 2016 where good friend and amazing photographer will take us on a journey from initial capture using natural lighting techniques to a finished professional image. If you want to see this process…I wouldn’t miss it! Carl is an amazing teacher…pretty funny I might add… ☺

Here are our next three amazing three speakers:

April 13: Carl Caylor – Before, After, and How to Get There – Elwood House, 509 N. 1st St., DeKalb, IL

May 11: Jessica Edwards – Senior Photography: “Be the Trend” – PROCAM, 4300 Westbrook, Aurora, IL

June 8: Emily Andrews – Promotions, Sales and Marketing – PROCAM, 4300 Westbrook, Aurora, IL

Visit our website at www.ppani.org and register TODAY!

Finally, I would like to say thank you to ProCam and Bill Skinner for providing such amazing hospitality and professional partnership in hosting our March program. Many Northern members and Board members have shared with me how much they enjoyed having our workshops at ProCam…and we will continue to do so as frequently as possible moving forward.

God bless,

Peter Yu

Letter From the President – February

A Letter from the President
February 17, 2015
Hello my fellow Northern-ites,

Well…our first Northern meeting was pretty much EPIC!!!!

Some of the amazing highlights include:

One of the highest entries in recent history…of 136 images judged!
The debut of PrintCompetition.com at Northern!! Huge thanks to Brian Morrison and Bruce Van Pelt!
Some amazing laughs and great conversations with friends on their way to great things…
One our new members entering her first print competition and almost winning best of show!!!
Siri making her [perfectly timed] debut as the 8th juror on our panel!!!! REALLY!!!! LOL
Although this was my first Northern All-Day Competition that I didn’t enter a case since becoming a member…I was nervously excited for other reasons. I am a firm believer in giving back and I couldn’t wait to see how many of my friends would do, especially some of our new members entering their first PPA affiliate competition. Well…I am proud to say that the results are in and you all did amazingly well…and learning was going on! Congrats especially to Julie Mettler and Megan Drane for rocking their first ever print comp images and for receiving several hard-earned merits by each of them! Also, kudos to one of our newer members, Jean Jung-McBride for almost winning Best of Show in her first showing! Next stop Districts…

Julie pretty much summed it up by saying “I don’t know why I waited so long to enter…”

…so if you are still not sure or nervous…just come and ask Julie or Megan if you should enter…!

(BTW…for those that didn’t come you also missed Siri, as our unexpected 8th member of the panel, making her own comments during a live judging…YOU HAD TO BE THERE! EPIC!!)

So now that you have a good handle on your images…time to register for APPI’s PhotoWorld where Illinois has the privilege of hosting the PPA’s North Central District photographic competition during March 18-21, 2016! Whether you are entering or just coming to watch you need to be there! (Deadline for entry is March 10).

A shout out to Bert and Al Behnke who have put together an incredible all-star lineup including Sandy Puc, Russ Harrington, Bry Cox, Jeff Dachowski, etc… just to name a few…

PhotoWorld Chicago

Let’s represent Northern BIG TIME at PhotoWorld… a little Northern “cocktail hour” tradition may be in order…

Looking forward to our next month’s workshop we will be featuring one of the country’s most amazing fine art photographers and artist in Maria Bernal. Not only will you be inspired and learn a great deal you will earn a PPA merit as the Board has received approval to be a PPA Merit Class! Thank you to ProCam for being our amazing host; if you haven’t been to ProCam it is an amazing store with all of your needs with great customer service.

Thank you to our esteemed panel of jurors that did an amazing job: Maria Bernal, Dan Thornton, Audrey Wancket, Ken Meade, Shelly Kraemer, Ned Winn and their fearless and “somewhat” comical Jury Chair Bob Hawkins. ☺

…and last but not least I want to thank each and every Northern Board member who continues to selflessly volunteer their time to serve our “Northern” family in making our group the best there is…it should be every member’s aspiration to serve on the Northern Board to see what it takes to run a high-caliber organization…

THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART!

I would like to end with one of the best [and unsolicited] quotes of all time…by one of our newest members and “cheerleader extraordinaire” Sabina Cavalli:

”this is crazy…where can you get this quality of education for $50”!?!?

True…so true…so renew your membership…ASAP…and I hope to see all of you in March!

Here are our next three amazing three speakers:

March 9: Maria Bernal – Portraiture Merit Class – PROCAM, 4300 Westbrook, Aurora, IL

April 13: Carl Caylor – Before, After, and How to Get There – Ellwood House, 509 N. 1st St., DeKalb, IL

May 11: Jessica Edwards – Senior Photography: “Be the Trend” – PROCAM, 4300 Westbrook, Aurora, IL

Visit our website at www.ppani.org and register TODAY!

Until we meet again,
